All Shows: 7:30 PM Doors, 8:00 PM Showtime

The Cellar Jazz Society (CJS) is one of Vancouver's newest and most dynamic arts organizations. It's also rooted in a long and rich history of presenting high-level jazz in the city.

The Society is dedicated to fostering public education, understanding, and appreciation of jazz by presenting performances at public venues and educational institutions. CJS did exactly that by presenting its inaugural series of jazz concerts in April 2014 at Pyatt Hall, a state-of-the-art theatre in downtown Vancouver. The society presented more shows at Pyatt Hall in June 2014 as part of the TD Vancouver International Jazz Festival, and has unveiled an exciting series of concerts for fall/winter 2014. Visit the Events page for information on our upcoming shows.

Eric Alexander/Dave Hazeltine Quartet: Oct 25 & 26
featuring ERIC ALEXANDER tenor saxophone, DAVID HAZELTINE piano, KEN LISTER bass, JESSE CAHILL drums

How good is tenor saxophonist Eric Alexander? When he competed in the 1991 Thelonious Monk International Jazz Saxophone Competition, he placed second behind Joshua Redman and ahead of third-place finisher Chris Potter. Alexander has been incredibly prolific as a recording artist, releasing 35 satisfying albums as a leader, including his latest Chicago Fire, which pays homage to Windy City sax greats such as Eddie Harris and Von Freeman. He has performed and recorded with McCoy Tyner, Pat Martino, Harold Mabern, and One For All (with Jim Rotondi, Steve Davis, David Hazeltine, John Webber, and Joe Farnsworth), among many others. Influenced by tenor greats such as Dexter Gordon and George Coleman, Alexander has developed his own big and robust sound that always makes an impact. read more

Jaclyn Guillou "Winter for Beginners" CD RELEASE & CD RELEASE CONCERT
Cellar Live releases "Winter For Beginners" a new album by Jaclyn Guillou on October 9th, 2014 and we are celebrating with a CD Release Concert!

PAL Studio Theatre, 300-581 Cardero Street, Vancouver.

More details and tickets will be available soon, please visit palstudiotheatre.com or jaclynguillou.com for more information. The album is a conceptual project exploring the roles of nature, the four seasons and how people respond and react to each other in their surroundings. All compositions and lyrics are written by Guillou with the exception of two songs arranged by guitarist David Blake. These songs are the iconic Canadian traditional folk song, Land of the Silver Birch and a special dedication to Phoebe Snow's 1974 hit, Poetry Man. A well crafted lyricist, Guillou provides romanticism, allure, imagery and fairytale with her lyrics on this album, particularly in the songs Spring Is Like A Promise For Beauty, Wooden House and Castle Garden. She explores modal ideas and darker sounds with a more instrumental approach in compositions Winter For Beginners, When The Leaves Fall, and Clouds.

The album and release concert features her quintet with one of Canada's hidden gems, Bruno Hubert on piano, plus David Blake on guitar, James Meger on bass and Andrew Millar on drums. Jaclyn produced the album alongside one of Canada's leading jazz musicians, trumpeter Brad Turner who will be performing in the concert. Other special guests will include Peggy lee on cello who also plays on the album.

Watch a "behind the scenes" video of Winter For Beginners with previews of the music from the upcoming release by Jaclyn Guillou on Cellar Live record label.
